The port of Strasbourg has invested in a new trimodal terminal in Lauterbourg, 50 kilometer downriver along the Rhine in order to better connect the North Sea to the container traffic by inland waterway from the Strasbourg Rhine port.  The demand for containers as a means of transport has almost trebled in the port of Strasbourg since 2004, reaching more than 420,000 TEU.

The new terminal cost €14 million provided by the port, the EU, the French government, the Greater Grand Est region and the Council of the Bas-Rhin department. It occupies an area of four hectares and has a planned maximum annual capacity of 80,000 TEU. Road, river and rail transport were given the same amount of space during construction. Among other things, the terminal now has two 400-meter long newly laid rail tracks for a connection to the SNCF station in Lauterbourg.
