Better rail connectivity between intermodal terminals in Poland

Published on 07-05-2020 at 10:52

PKP Cargo will launch new container trains within Poland branded under the trademark ‘the Connect Operator’. They are focused on improving rail connectivity between the port of Gdańsk and three important intermodal terminals in the country. The first shipments are scheduled for the turn of May and June.

Polish largest rail freight company PKP Cargo will provide the Connect Operator container trains on three routes. All of them will end in Gdańsk but will start in Gliwice, Poznań and Warsaw. As a result, the new network of container train connections will facilitate the delivery of containers to the port of Gdańsk, the main harbour in Poland and in the Baltics. The branded service is being prepared by PKP Cargo Connect, a freight forwarding subsidiary of PKP Cargo.

Fixed timetable

Another feature of the Connect Operator trains is their fixed schedule. They will depart several times a week on certain days. “The advantage of our Connect Operator trains is that the customer knows which day and at what time his freight will leave the departure station and at what time it will reach the terminus”, said Ivan Ružbacký, President of the Management Board of PKP Cargo Connect. The logistics company guarantees that the containers will be delivered from Warsaw or Poznań to Gdańsk in 8 hours and from Gliwice to Gdańsk in 15 hours. PKP Cargo Connect will also provide the last-mile option for delivering containers to/from the terminals at the distance of 30-50 kilometres.

Future growth

Starting from 2019, PKP Cargo is steadily implementing its strategy aimed to maintain its leadership in the Polish rail freight market and to strengthen its positions in the European Union. The branded container trains of PKP Cargo Connect is one of the steps in this direction. For the future, PKP Cargo plans to extend the Connect Operator service with new routes. “The network of connections under the Connect Operator service will be gradually expanded in Poland, it will also include international connections. For this purpose we will use our subsidiary PKP Cargo International, we also have the opportunity to organise transportation in cooperation with our partners from other European railways”, specified Czesław Warsewicz, CEO of PKP Cargo.
