DB Cargo wants to triple volumes
General Manager Sigrid Nikutta of DB Cargo wants to get around 25 million truck rides from German roads until 2030. This number corresponds to an expansion of the current market share of rail freight in Germany from 19 to 25 per cent.
She expressed that ambition during a press conference with the German specialist media. According to the top woman, the expansion of the freight volumes should be achieved, among other things, by making freight transport by rail more accessible for the cargo providers.
Link2Rail
DB Cargo already has digital tools in-house to realise the new objectives, for example via the booking site Link2Rail. In addition, the service level and the reliability of the service must increase, she says.
In addition, she committed to collecting goods from customers by truck if they do not have their own rail connection. Also, in the future, drivers must always be “stand-by” in order to take over the next journey.
Rotterdam
The number of journeys on major freight corridors must also increase considerably. The company intends to offer more frequencies at the end of this year between the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp and the South German hinterland. This would involve four trips a day.
There should also be more trips between the port of Hamburg and Cologne. DB Cargo wants to increase the frequencies of the number of freight trains between the capital Berlin and the Ruhr area.
Sufficient capacity
Nikutta points out that DB Cargo has sufficient capacity to triple the current volume. More volume is also needed to make the current freight network profitable again after years of losses.
