Svensk politics is clear – Now it's time for action!

In June 2018, the Government presented its new freight transport strategy – a strategy that clearly identifies the need for the transfer of freight from road to rail and shipping. The strategy focuses on the modern freight transport system of the future, where freight transport is efficient and smart, exploits the full potential of rail and uses a greater share of maritime capacity. The strategy is important, both in order to achieve the Swedish climate goals, but also to ensure the business sector's need for reliable transport and thus secure Swedish jobs. The Swedish Transport Administration was given a number of assignments in connection with the strategy, including a mission to promote better conditions for freight transport by rail and shipping and two assignments related to the promotion of intermodal transport. In view of the above assignments, the Swedish Transport Administration has presented three reports in autumn 2019 and spring 2020: Measures to increase the share of freight transport by rail and by sea, Obstacles to increased transhipment to intermodal rail transport and the Roadmap for the transfer of freight from road to rail and shipping.

The latter roadmap expected clear and concrete measures to be presented. Measures that could be easily and quickly impacted to support the overall national freight transport strategy. We have taken note with great curiosity of the Swedish Transport Administration's reports and believe that most of the proposed measures are quite right, but we still lack concrete timetables for when the measures will be implemented. Many of Sweden's industrial companies rely on a well-functioning freight railway, perhaps even more now during the current pandemic than before. The knowledge of how we can quickly switch to a more sustainable transport system already exists. All the information that may be needed to carry out government tasks is available from railway operators as well as freight forwarders and shipping companies – all familiar with the demands and expectations of the owners of goods.Instead of more investigations or further analyses, conditional, time-determined and concrete measures are now required.

The answers already exist – now a workshop is needed!
