The Geodis Group, Road Transport Division of the French State Railways SNCF, has set up an intermodal link between Hendaye on the Franco-Spanish border and Metz in Lorraine, not far from the German border. It extends over 1100 kilometers.  The trains run five to six times a week; door-to-door deliveries are by truck.

With the road-and-rail links between the Iberian peninsula and northeastern France, Geodis aims to provide Portuguese and Spanish exporters with access to Germany, the Benelux countries and Eastern Europe, as well as imports from there. Accordingly, the offer is aimed primarily at the food retail, automotive and other industries. In the medium term, it is planned to set up a stopover in Bonneuil-sur-Marne near Paris.

The new connection would eliminate up to 11,500 lorry journeys a year on the route.  The users of the new connection will be granted real time access to tracking and tracing information regarding their consignments.
