August 2018

€127.5 million will flow to training workers for road freight and inland navigation in 2018, while rail freight receives nothing.

The 2018 federal budget outlay for the education and training of specialists in road freight transport and in inland navigation is planned at €127.5 million.  The beneficiary for €125 million of this amount will be road hauliers, while the remaining €2.5 million will go to inland navigation.

In contrast, the rail freight sector leaves empty handed. Railway undertakings will have to pay all training costs by themselves.  The market share of rail freight transport in the past year was around 17 percent, while that of the inland navigation about 8%. In the framework of the Rail Freight Master Plan, the Federal Government had at least made plans to balance the support measures with other modes of transport in the future.

The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) confirmed that specifically in road freight transport the promotion program aims to train professional drivers. The Federal Government also wants to increase the number of apprenticeships in inland navigation.
