Russian Railways together with its partner FESCO intends to reduce the delivery time on the Japan-Europe multimodal route. The trial shipment of containers has been provided in 19 days. This figure could be reduced to 14 days and even to 11 days.
“We are trying to provide new services, and in order to attract Japanese shippers, we shorten the delivery time on the Japan – Europe route. The delivery time to Poland has already decreased to 19 days, and we intend to reduce it even more, it will be about 11-14 days”, CEO of Russian Railways Oleg Belozerov said at the 5th Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok. This will allow the railway company to attract more freight volumes from Japan. Almost a third of freight traffic running on the Trans-Siberian Railway is going from or to Japan.
INTERTRAN project
One of the key ways to reduce the delivery time is to implement electronic documents for customs proceedings. Currently, such technology has been introduced at Vladivostok seaport. The paperless documents make it possible to provide up to 30 operations and decrease the delivery time for up to four days. Russian Railways is moving towards electronic documents since 2017 within the INTERTRAN project. On 4 September, the first regular freight train with Japanese containers departed from Vladivostok seaport using electronic documents.
Moreover, Russian Railways plans to develop intermodal facilities on the route to Europe. Together with the Japanese partners, it is designing two future terminals: the Baltiysky logistics complex in Leningrad Oblast and the Primorsky dry port, close to the city of Ussuriysk in Primorsky Krai. Also, Russian Railways intends to open a representative office in Tokyo for intensifying cooperation.
