Belarus upgrades Brest intermodal terminal

Published on 19-09-2019 at 10:56

Belarusian Railway has completed the modernisation of the intermodal terminal at Brest-Severny (Brest-North) railway station. The project was worth over 9 million Euros. It will allow to improve container handling on the east-west corridor, including the rail freight connections on the New Silk Road.

The modernisation project included upgrades of tracks, increase of handling and storage capacities, installation of four modern gantry cranes and purchase of two reach stackers with a loading capacity of 45 tonnes. After completing the works, the intermodal terminal has a total area of 48,167 square meters. Its daily handling capacity has been increased by 1.5 times (up to 1,163 containers per day), while the storage areas have been doubled (up to 2,500 containers).

1 million TEUs

These measures allow Belarusian Railway to reduce container handling to 8 hours and 30 minutes with transshipment, and to 5 hours without transshipment. Moreover, it has created opportunities for better sorting of containers per direction and according to the customer’s requests.

The container traffic between China and Europe via Belarus consists of 50 pairs of freight trains per day. These are handled at three country’s border crossings: Brest/Terespol, Bruzgi/Kuznica and Svisloch/Siemianowka. Over 80 per cent of containers that are transported by Belarusian Railway to Europe is processed at Brest-Severny railway station. Annually, this intermodal facility handles container traffic of 300,000 TEUs. By 2025, it will increase up to 1 million TEUs.
