Czech logistics company Metrans, a subsidiary of HHLA, has opened a new intermodal terminal in Königs Wusterhausen in the vicinity of Berlin. The facility was launched in partnership with LUTRA, operator of GVZ Schönefelder Kreuz logistics centre. It will improve the intermodal connection of the German seaports of Hamburg and Bremerhaven with Metrans’ hinterland hubs in Prague and Česká Třebová, Czechia.

The new intermodal facility was named Metrans Berlin terminal due to its close location to the German capital. It became available for the loading operations on 4 November. On that day, the new terminal handled the first containers from the port of Hamburg. Metrans Berlin terminal has a direct rail freight link to Hamburg. Also, with the help of the Metrans network of shuttle trains, it is connected with the port of Bremerhaven, the second-largest harbour in Germany, and the ports of Rotterdam, Duisburg and Koper.

Available services

Metrans Berlin terminal was established on the base of GVZ Schönefelder Kreuz logistics centre. The latter is situated 25 kilometres southeast of Berlin. Due to the convenient location, it provides a good connection with the European highways (A10) and railway corridors (North Sea-Baltic, Scandinavian – Mediterranean, Orient – East Mediterranean).

Moreover, at the heart of GVZ Schönefelder Kreuz centre is the Königs Wusterhausen river port. As a result, the list of freight operations could be expanded with inland transportation. Currently, Metrans offers only road and rail delivery via the new terminal. It is worth noting that the Metrans Berlin terminal is able to handle dangerous goods and reefer containers.
