Intermodal transport at the heart of Europe this week

Published on 26-10-2020 at 11:57

Combined transport is on the agenda this week. Two international events take place to discuss the performance and potential of the road-rail combination. Intermodal transport is at the heart of the European Green Deal and the European Climate Law, the industry says.

On Tuesday 27 October the European Intermodal Summit 2020 takes place. This online event is hosted by the UIRR – the International Union for Road-Rail Combined Transport. A day later, the same organisation collaborates with the UIC – International Union of Railways for the online presentation of the bi-annual Combined Transport Report. Both events are supported by RailFreight.com.

European Intermodal Summit 2020

How has combined transport been delivering solutions to the challenges of the past? And how will it continue to deliver solutions to the challenges of the present and future times? These are the main themes of the European Intermodal Summit 2020.

Intermodal freight transport is an essential solution to meaningfully slow down climate change and environmental degradation. In addition to the changes to be brought about by Mobility Package 1, road congestion, transcontinental freight, the Belt and Road Initiative and driver shortage are all challenges for which intermodal transport can deliver a solution, the UIRR explains.

Combined transport is the unique form of intermodal transport where the road legs are kept as short as possible, and the long distances are encouraged to be done by rail. The UIRR has placed this form of transportation at the heart of its business.

Among the speakers are Transport Commissioner Adina-Ioana Valean, German State Secretary of the Ministry of Transport Steffen Bilger, European Parliament Transport and Tourism Committee (TRAN) First Vice Chair, MEP István Újhelyi and Magda Kopczynska, Director D of DG MOVE. Here you can register for the event, it is free of charge.

2020 Report on Combined Transport

UIC and UIRR jointly produced the 2020 Report on Combined Transport and commissioned BSL Transportation Consultants to undertake the assessment of the combined transport situation in Europe for the publication.

The 2020 Report on Combined Transport compiles up-to-date information on rail/road combined transport volumes for the year 2019 for all market segments. It gathers the market participants’ assessment of market structures and future developments. A particular focus of the 2020 report lies on the presentation of regional disparities between selected regions in Europe as well as on intermodal loading units (ILU), which are examined with regard to their use in combined transport. Moreover, the study gives an overview of the role of terminals in the combined transport chain, their capacities and services offered.

Sandra Géhénot, UIC Freight Director, Ralf-Charley Schultze, UIRR President, Eric Lambert, Chairman of the UIC Combined Transport Group and Mathias Lahrmann, Managing Director of BSL Transportation Consultants will guide the online audience through the report and the essence of it for the industry. Here you can register, it is free of charge.
