PKP Cargo and LTG cargo Polska have submitted a request to establish a joint enterprise at the Polish Office for Competition and Consumer Protection. Poland and Lithuania’s two national carriers want to develop a common logistics operator. The request of the two companies is still pending. However, when accepted, the joint venture they want to establish will function as an intermodal carrier between Lithuania, Poland, Italy and Germany.

In an exclusive interview with RailFreight.com, Martynas Burba, Communications Project Manager at Lithuanian Railways, stated earlier that LTG Cargo’s primary goal for 2021 is to expand internationally. “We want to launch a semi-trailer transportation service for our customers both in Lithuania and Europe. Additionally, our company also aims to expand internationally. Last year we established new subsidiaries in Poland and Ukraine, which will also contribute to our diversification goals”, he underlined.

Interntaional expansion

The will for expansion reflected practically on the request for establishing a Polish-Lithuanian intermodal carrier. Not only will LTG become more active in Poland, but we see that it aims to open paths to Central and Southern Europe. Of course, to become a robust intermodal player, Poland’s contribution is crucial since it has a fair and continuously growing share of the European intermodal market.

That is why LTG’s expansion in Poland consisted of several different stages and took place gradually. The company opened its Polish branch almost a year ago when it signed a joint activity agreement with PKP Cargo for intermodal transportation. It also set up a transportation technology centre in Bialystok, which certifies rolling stock in Lithuania, while it already completed successfully training and certification procedures for its drivers. Currently, a year later, LTG Cargo is ready to reap the fruits of a long-term investment and set new goals.
