Spain: 72 mln euros for a new rail freight terminal in Valladolid 06/07/23
< Back to listThe Spanish Ministry of Transport, Mobility, and Urban Agenda (MITMA) launched a tender for 71,8 million euros to build a new railway terminal in Valladolid, in northern Spain. The project entails the construction of a new rail freight terminal and a rail maintenance centre.
Moreover, there will be a new tech development facility that will be managed by Redalsa, a subsidiary of the country’s infrastructure manager Adif. The funds for the new terminal will come from Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, financed by the NextGeneration EU Program.
The Valladolid Railway Complex
This project is part of a larger plan to turn Valladolid into a hub for rail freight and rail technology development, the Valladolid Railway Complex. The first phase of this initiative is the development of the East Bypass, a 17,5 kilometres rail section to which the terminal will be connected. The new line will be equipped with the Iberian gauge and will go around the Valladolid-Campo Grande station, which has an international gauge. It is not yet clear when either the East Bypass or the new terminal will be ready to be put in use.
As MITMA pointed out, the new terminal will cover an area of 230,000 square metres and will have seven tracks suitable for 750-metre trains. The Redalsa centre will cover 140,750 square metres, while 12,000 will be dedicated to the Technology Centre. There will also be an area for container handling. The facility will also take over the activities of La Esperanza, a train station dedicated to logistics functions, and Argales, an industrial estate.
