Better rail access to the port quays in Gdynia

Author: RD 2023/09/25

Longer and heavier trains, carrying more cargo, arrive at the sea port in Gdynia. PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe SA has completed major works improving the access of freight trains to the quays. The investment worth almost PLN 1.9 billion net is co-financed by EU funds from the CEF "Connecting Europe" instrument.

PLK SA completed the main works under the project titled: "Improving rail access to the sea port in Gdynia." The investment ensures efficient and safe delivery and collection of larger amounts of goods by rail in a shorter time. Longer, up to 750 meters, and heavier freight trains, with a load of 22.5 tons per axle, reach the quays and can transport more cargo by rail - the most ecological means of transport. This will translate into a reduction in the number of trucks on the roads.

As part of the investment, 113.5 km of new tracks (out of 115 km), 329 turnouts (out of 332) and all crossings (24) were built. From March 2022, train traffic to the port is conducted from the Gdynia Port Local Control Center supported by two new signal boxes. Two viaducts are ready, 640 and 170 meters long, which have improved the capacity of the lines leading to the port. Carriers use public cargo holds. The bridge over the Chylonka River was renovated. All (13) underground retention tanks are ready, which, together with the new sewerage network, ensure proper drainage of the area.

All works are scheduled to be completed by the end of the year. The remaining works concern the reconstruction of high-voltage lines and the construction of tracks and overhead lines in place of the removed poles. The value of the investment called "Improving rail access to the sea port in Gdynia" amounts to almost PLN 1.9 billion net. Almost 43 percent this amount is EU funding from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) financial instrument.
