Intermodal trucking surcharge due to driver shortage 26/10/18

The Deutsche Bahn subsidiary, which operates in seaport hinterland traffic, Transfracht, levies a Truck Capacity surcharge of € 20 per vehicle and tour at the Ulm, Kornwestheim, Munich, Nuremberg and Basel terminals from 1 October.  The action  reacts to the capacity shortage experienced in trucking for container-based intermodal transport.

The reasons for the negative development in the trucking sector, which endangers the predictability of the supply chain in maritime hinterland traffic, are complex: primary is the acute shortage of drivers, a far too low degree of willingness to invest in the purchase of new vehicles (due to low margins), and also long and incalculable waiting times at some terminals, depots or at the shippers. Increased congestion in the road infrastructure will also lead to a significant reduction in vehicle circulation, which will lead to lower productivity and rising costs.
