Hans-Jörg Bertschi - Logistician who changes the world of railways

Hans-Jörg Bertschi had a vision. In 1985, he made it clear in his dissertation that using railway through Switzerland pays off despite the appallingly high costs. The Swiss chemical logistics expert has been fighting for his conviction both on an entrepreneurial and political level. And he was rewarded for his perseverance: 31 years after the publication of his dissertation he was on board when the first official train rolled through the Gotthard Base Tunnel.

Bertschi also impresses with his performance as a logistics entrepreneur. During his 30 years with the family business - 24 of which as CEO - he developed the Bertschi Company, founded in 1956, into a globally committed and valued partner in chemical logistics: 2,800 employees, more than 1,000 trucks, more than 30,000 loading units.

The name Bertschi is inseparable from combined transport in Switzerland.  He is Chairman of the Board of the Swiss combined transport operator Hupac, a founding-member of UIRR and a prominent driver of the development of Combined Transport in Europe and beyond.

UIRR congratulates Mr Berschi, a visionary, a logistician and a master of Combined Transport, on the formal recognition of his lifetime achievement.
