East-West Gate completes construction of an intermodal terminal on the Hungarian-Ukrainian border

16.12.2021

Hungary wants to return to the world map of logistics, how will Ukraine take advantage of this?

In a few weeks, the construction of the East-West Gate intermodal terminal (EWG) will be completed, and in the second quarter of 2022 it will begin accepting the first trains, according to the railway magazine Railway Supply.

It took private operator EWG just a year from launch to completion of the terminal. During this time, more than 10 kilometers of railway lines have been built.

The new terminal area is larger than Magritte (an island on the Danube River between the two parts of the Hungarian capital, Buda and Pest), and the concrete pavement is thirty football fields. EWG uses the most modern technologies, many logistics solutions are unique.

Camco has been selected as the automation partner for Hungaian modern East-West Gate Terminal (EWG), the gateway to the New Silk Road to Europe.

Camco Technologies innovative gate automation and OCR cameras for vehicle and container tracking will soon be deployed at the East-West Gate Terminal in Hungary (EWG).

Austrian specialists from Künz are constructing gantry cranes with a width of 41 m and 28 m on rails and a wheel crane with a height of 20 m. The giant cranes are unique in Europe in terms of size and technology – devices with a lifting capacity of 45 tons each will be controlled remotely due to the connection to the 5G network.

The EWG digital twin will monitor the logistics at the terminal in real time and in 3D: the movement of trains, trucks, cranes and the entire route that cargo will pass is reproduced.

Hungary intends to return to the logistics map of the world and announces that EWG will become the largest and most powerful land terminal on the continent. The Hungarian terminal is designed to handle up to 1 million 20-foot containers per year.

Feneshlitke (Hungary), not far from the Hungarian-Ukrainian border, half a century ago was one of the most important railway junctions not only in Hungary, but also in the East and West, where thousands of trains were received.

In the past decade, Hungary has considered various options for returning the previous handling volumes. The EWG should live up to expectations, which should become the new railway gateway to Asia and Europe.

Hungary hopes that the capacity of the new terminal will be in high demand. First, rail freight traffic between Asia and Europe is growing every year. Secondly, the traditional route across the Belarusian-Polish border is limited by the capacity of the Brest and Malashevichi terminals, and now container trains have to wait for several days.

To increase traffic, EWG offers the market an alternative route through Hungary and, accordingly, through Ukraine.

The Fenelistka terminal expects to handle cargo not only from China, but also from Japan and South Korea.
