Belarusian company plans to build new container terminal near Polish border

Despite the economic sanctions imposed on Belarus by the European Union, the local companies are planning further investments in rail infrastructure. Among other things, a new container terminal will be built close to the border with Poland. The facility is expected to be put into operation in 2025.

The planned container terminal will be located at the Svisloch railway station, which is situated near the Svisloch/Siemianówka border crossing. Its construction is estimated at more than 23 million US dollars. The investment project includes the creation of access roads, installation of branch railway lines, erection of a container terminal itself, several warehouses and storage yards, a terminal for dangerous goods, service facilities (customs, water and energy supply, parking areas, etc.), offices and others. It is expected that the construction works will start this year and will be completed in 2025. The project will be implemented by Unionway LLC, which was incorporated only in mid-January 2022 and became a resident of the Grodnoinvest Free Economic Zone.

Potential freight traffic
“Logistics is one of the most promising areas for the development of the Grodno region,” noted the Administration of the Grodnoinvest Free Economic Zone. Therefore, the new container terminal is in line with this policy. As the intermodal facility will have access to tracks of two gauges (1,520 and 1,435 millimetres), it will have a great potential in transhipping boxes running on the New Silk Road from China to the EU. According to the preliminary estimations, it will handle up to 10 pairs of container trains daily. Moreover, the facility will process bulk and abnormal freight.
