In the morning hours of December 22, 2022, Port Koper reloaded this year's millionth TEU, exceeding the magic number it had been striving for in recent years. Koper became the first port on the Adriatic to exceed one million TEU in one year.

“This is an important milestone, especially in light of the current global situation in the logistics industry. The company congratulates all employees of the container terminal and engaged business partners, whose work justifies the reputation of the most important container terminal in the Adriatic,” commented Boštjan Napast, President of the Management Board of Luka Koper.

Over the last two years, the Koper Container Terminal has experienced a period of intensive investment. The expansion of the quay and additional storage facilities has been completed, with the latest upgrade being the installation of two STS spuer post-panamax cranes in May this year. All investments were made with the terminal fully operational, which is an achievement in itself.

“I am glad that Luka Koper invests, develops and is led by people who have a clearly defined vision and goals. I believe that this will not be the last milestone that the port of Koper will achieve in the future. We have been chasing one million container units for a long time, so today is a historic achievement. Such events are extremely important, because even in uncertain times, they strengthen the position of our port, economy and country on the world map,” noted the Minister of Infrastructure of the Republic of Slovenia, Boyan Kumer.

Further growth in container handling and a high level of productivity will largely depend on the Pier I extension project. These investments include additional quays and storage yards in the northern part of Pier I, purchase of additional quay cranes, extension of the terminal's railway station, extension of the terminal's inland storage areas and the purchase of various handling equipment.

In line with global logistics trends, the trend of containerization continues - this is evidenced by the increase in the number of containers in Koper so far and the assessment of the market potential of our hinterland markets. The increase in capacity is a response to the expectations of shipowners and other users of the port, and the company will be able to maintain its competitive advantages, which for many years have put the Koper container terminal in the first place on the Adriatic. The new development cycle of the container terminal is in line with the schedule for the construction of the Koper – Divača railway line, which should be commissioned in 2026.

Miha Kalčič, director of the container terminal, added that: “This milestone is proof that we have been working and investing in the right direction. This historic million is also important because it has further strengthened us as the first container terminal in the Adriatic, which means we can expect new volumes and sea services.”
