A NEW INTERMODAL RAILWAY TERMINAL IS BEING BUILT IN SZEGED

Green freight transport: 60,000 truckloads of transit goods can be transferred to the railway every year

A new intermodal railway terminal will be built in Szeged in the area of ​​the former transfer station in Kiskundorozsma, it was announced at the general meeting of the Association of Hungarian Logistics Service Centers (MLSZKSZ). 60,000 semi-trailers can be transferred to the railway annually at the PSP Terminal, which is being built as an investment by Petrolsped Szállitmányozasi Kft., thereby significantly reducing Hungarian transit traffic in the north-south (M5) and west-south (M1) directions and the associated environmental impact. The terminal, built with a private investment of HUF 200 million, will open its doors in September 2023 and will also be suitable for loading semi-trailers and containers onto trains. The PSP Terminal connects Western and Central European railway transshipments via Szeged, primarily with the road traffic of Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey.

The spread of environmentally friendly modes of transport is a key issue for achieving climate goals, as today road freight transport is responsible for around 20 percent of the world's harmful emissions. Without the rapid spread of intermodal transport, the goals laid down in the European Green Deal cannot be realized, i.e. to reduce the burden on our environment by 55 percent by 2030 and by 90 percent by 2050.

Hungarian intermodal traffic has been growing slowly but steadily in recent years, and at the same time, more than 90 percent of all domestic intermodal traffic is handled by three Budapest terminals operating at full capacity. " In Hungary, intermodal terminals currently operate only on the east-west corridor, but the Budapest transshipments handling south-north traffic, as well as the Curtici terminal on the Hungarian-Romanian border, are full," stressed Zsolt Fülöp. The president of the MLSZKSZ added that the capital's intermodal traffic burdens the highways instead of diverting the goods to the railway near the border points. That's why we need a terminal with which the goods coming from Serbia by truck can be loaded onto the railway and reach North, Central and Western Europe.

The PSP Terminal can be launched in September

A solution to this is offered by the private investment of Petrolsped Szállitmányozasi Kft., the PSP Terminal being built in Szeged, the concept of which was presented at the April 18 general meeting of the MLSZKSZ. The investor is developing an intermodal terminal in the former ROLA transshipment area in Kiskundorozsma, which will start operating in September 2023.

More than one million Turkish, Bulgarian, Romanian and Serbian trucks travel on the M5 motorway in the Szeged area every year. The terminal in Kiskundorozsma, close to the triple border between Romania and Serbia, the M5 and M43 highways, is an ideal location for transferring part of this transit truck traffic to the train," said Attila Kovács, managing director of PSP Terminál Kft .

The PSP Terminal, which will be created on a 4.8-hectare development area, will be able to handle 120 semi-trailers and the same number of TEU containers (20-foot standard containers) at the same time. They are able to serve three 650-meter pairs of trains each day, consisting of 19 twin cars, which can transport 38 semi-trailers or 38 forty-foot containers per train. With this capacity, the terminal can reduce truck traffic on the M5/M1 highways by around 60,000 trucks annually.

The operation of the facility is supported by a self-developed terminal operating system, they will be able to transfer craneable and non-craneable semi-trailers, exchange cabinets and containers onto the railway. The loading track is served by an electric locomotive in accordance with European Union directives, without carbon dioxide emissions.

Intermodal hub between Western Europe and the Balkans

PSP Terminal runs regular trains based on customer requests, which connect railway terminals and seaports 1,200-1,400 kilometers away. Directly to the Bettembourg and Poznań railway junctions, and through them to France, Spain, Italy, Great Britain or the Baltic States.

The development will be implemented with HUF 200 million, which is entirely financed by Petrolsped Szállitmányozasi Kft.
