METRANS to Introduce VTG’s r2L Solution for Semi-Trailer Transport at Dunajská Streda Terminal

The company gets ready to enter semitrailers by rail market.

METRANS is expanding its freight capabilities at the Dunajská Streda terminal with the introduction of the r2L (Road-to-Rail) solution in partnership with VTG. This new system will enable the terminal to handle not only traditional containers but also semi-trailers, enhancing the range of goods that can be transported by rail.

The r2L technology is designed to transfer semi-trailers, which are typically non-craneable, onto rail wagons. This innovation allows up to 95% of trailers that previously relied on road transport to be moved by rail. The r2L device converts these trailers into craneable units, integrating them into METRANS’ modular freight operations.

With METRANS staff already trained to manage this equipment, the terminal is prepared to implement the new system. This addition aligns with METRANS' efforts to promote sustainability in freight transport. Rail transport is known for its lower carbon footprint compared to road haulage. By shifting semi-trailers from road to rail, METRANS estimates a reduction of one tonne of CO2 emissions per 1,000 kilometers traveled.

The launch of this service will enable METRANS to expand beyond the pure container movements, which has been the company focus since its foundation. Strength of this player in Central and Eastern Europe brings a hope of more truck movements to be shifted to rail not only in the western part of the old continent.
