The port of Valencia operates the first train on the railway highway to Madrid after the DANA
The mobilization of an investment of 184.6 million euros to repair the tracks has allowed the service to be restored earlier than expected
The railway motorway between the port of Valencia and the intermodal freight terminal in Abroñigal (Madrid) has now been fully restored after the DANA passed through Valencia on 29 October and its collateral effects on road and railway infrastructure. Today, the first complete operation was carried out from the Valencian port to Madrid after the work of rebuilding the tracks. In this sense, the mobilisation of an extraordinary investment of 184.6 million euros to repair and rebuild the railway infrastructure in Valencia by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has allowed the service to be restored days ahead of schedule .
The rail highway will operate four weekly services by early 2025
The combined transport terminal at the port of Valencia, capable of loading and unloading semi-trailers between roads and railways, can now operate at 100% “thanks to the record-breaking repair of the railway infrastructure after the DANA”, says the port authority in the presence of the general director of Transitalia in Iberia, Juan Carlos Arocas; the general director of Tramesa, Jesús Calvo; and the president of the port, Mar Chao. At the beginning of 2025, the motorway will begin to carry out four weekly services. Initially, this was planned to happen at the end of November , but the passage of the DANA stopped the plans.
This infrastructure allows truck trailers to travel from Italy to Madrid and vice versa by transferring at the Valencian port area , thereby saving 16,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere each year. The fact that one of the gateways to the railway motorway is the port of Valencia makes it possible to connect with the maritime motorways that link Valencia with the Mediterranean ports. This project is financed by the European Union's Next Generation funds and the Spanish Government's Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. In addition, another 20 million euros of investment are planned to extend this motorway to Portugal.
