Alessandria Smistamento will become an intermodal logistics hub

A 36-month development protocol was presented by the FS Group

Teamwork between the various companies of the FS Group and the local authorities concerned, to make the Alessandria Smistamento airport a real intermodal hub for the transport of goods .

This is foreseen by a memorandum of understanding signed in Alessandria to use the airport areas of the Piedmontese city as a new intermodal hub, enhancing its real estate assets with important repercussions both in terms of urban planning and integrated logistics .

The protocol was signed, in the presence, among others, of the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini and institutional representatives of the territory, by Umberto Lebruto , Chief Executive Officer of FS Sistemi Urbani (lead company of the Urban Polo of the FS Italiane Group), Gianpiero Strisciuglio , Chief Executive Officer of Mercitalia Logistics (lead company of the Logistics Pole) and Lucio Menta , RFI investment director (lead company of the Infrastructure Pole).

The entire project will be developed in two phases, with a total duration of 36 months . The first will end in December 2023 with the delivery by the Italian Railway Network of the Technical-Economic Feasibility Project of an innovative terminal, to define the costs and timing of future interventions, in line with the development of traffic resulting from the construction of the Third Pass of Giovi , the work aimed at improving the connections of the Ligurian port system with the main railway lines of Northern Italy and with the rest of Europe.

Subsequently, by December 2024 , the Masterplan will be defined for the creation of an effective , convenient and quality modal interchange hub , capable of managing the flows of the various transport modes in a coordinated and integrated form. The study presented in Alessandria aims to identify, in particular, effective solutions for the enhancement of freight traffic in the ports of Savona and Genoa , as well as to regenerate the surrounding areas with marked potential for urban and intermodal development. A technical table will then be dedicated to monitoring the progress of the various activities.

The Masterplan, developed with 10% of the remaining funds from the 2018 Budget Law , therefore has the objective of giving new functions to the areas of the Alessandria Smistamento airport belonging to Mercitalia Logistics, RFI and Trenitalia.

Furthermore, as part of the Protocol already signed in 2016, a further 15 million euros were allocated for the implementation of the so-called "Shared Project" for the development of the Piedmont area. In fact, with the subscription, the 11 Piedmontese municipalities involved in the construction of the new HS/HC line Third Pass of Giovi will have additional funds available to carry out infrastructural and tourist development interventions in their territory.
