The Juragiai intermodal terminal, which is to be the largest and most modern in the Baltic countries, will be located in the heart of Lithuania, specifically at the intersection of Rail Baltica and Via Baltica in Kaunas County. It will be able to accommodate up to 6 full, undivided trains at the same time, connecting Scandinavia with Southern Europe. The project, worth more than EUR 300 million, provides new jobs and increased freight traffic throughout Europe.

It is expected that within the next 5 years, the area of 72 ha will include warehouses with an area of 200,000 m2 and a capacity of over 200,000 TEU. This expansion heralds growing opportunities to increase the volume of freight transport on Lithuanian Railways.

Unique location

The Juragiai intermodal terminal boasts an excellent location. It is located near the Rail Baltica railway lines (1435), 1520 gauge line, the Via Baltica A5 motorway connection under construction, and Kaunas airport. The terminal is also strategically located to integrate with the seaports of Tallinn, Riga and Klaipėda, improving intermodal freight transport in the region.

Contributions to the European Green Deal

By aligning with the EU's climate goals, the intermodal terminal in Juragiai can make a significant contribution to the European Green Deal. The services offered will be in line with the EU's mission to reduce CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030. Most of the cargo will switch to efficient rail transport, which will further reduce CO2 emissions in Lithuania.

Development conditions

The Kaunas District authorities paved the way for the rapid and favorable development of the terminal. The supportive attitude of municipal leaders promotes job creation and allows us to face local social challenges. Joint discussions between Rail Baltica and LTG Infra pave the way to improve the flow of goods through Lithuania. The project also gained momentum thanks to the support of the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania and the Lithuanian Road Administration. The start of construction of the terminal is scheduled for the first quarter of 2024, and the start of operation is scheduled for 2026.

Investor interest

Lithuanian and European intermodal terminal operators express great interest in the Juragiai intermodal terminal project. Recently, European transport and warehousing companies have shown increased enthusiasm for terminal development. The final decision regarding investors and developers is expected soon.

— Our cooperation with the Kaunas district authorities, LTG Infra and the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania was satisfactory. All parties were open to this vision and made every effort to accelerate the implementation of the project, comments Mindaugas Zilinskas from Kaunas Cargo Hub.
