From this year onwards, deliveries of new Krone vehicles in southwest Germany will be handled by combined transport. Since mid-January, a block train has been running once or twice a week on the route between Werlte and Wörth, the headquarters of Daimler Trucks.

This means that up to 32 semi-trailers can travel south in a CO2 - saving manner - in return, ready-to-deliver trucks and semi-trailers are transported by Daimler Trucks to customers in northern Germany and Scandinavia.

This was made possible on the one hand by the construction of a new loading facility in the town of Werlte, which was realized by the Emsländische Eisenbahn GmbH (EEB), and on the other hand by the Austrian service provider Vega International Car Transport, a commercial vehicle transfer company, said Krone.

The special low-floor wagons made it possible to load vehicles up to four meters high. And with a specially developed “r2L Connector” adapter system, semi-trailers that cannot be craned can also be transported. Heiko Isfort, Head of Logistics at the Krone Commercial Vehicle Group:

“By entering intermodal delivery logistics for new vehicles, we are not only able to reduce CO 2 emissions and significantly reduce the burden on the roads, but also significantly increase our efficiency. In collaboration with our partners Vega and EGOO (Ostfriesland-Oldenburg Railway Company), we have already considered further routes.”

The city of Werlte and the Emsland district supported the project and, under the auspices of the Emsland Railway, planned a transshipment point directly on the bypass track. City director Ludger Kewe:

“This investment and the current developments show that the loading track is developing into a successful project for the Werlte business location.”

And delivery of the trailers by train is not only an advantage for Werlte and the entire district. With this solution, CO2 emissions will be reduced in the future and the traffic hubs will be relieved, according to the deputy district administrator, Hartmut Moorkamp.

Together with the management of the vehicle plant, Moorkamp and Kewe were convinced of the implementation on the occasion of the first rail loading on site.
