Four hundred Italian companies unite in new rail freight task force

Italian associations, representing four hundred companies involved with rail freight, are joining forces in an initiative to revive the industry. They have named the task force “Binario Italia” and, with it, are looking to give rail a central position in Italy’s economic development.

At its core, the goal of Binario Italia is to get rail freight going again, both in the long and short term. To that end, the task force aims to put together a joint policy paper and combine their strength when engaging with Italian institutions. Unity makes strength, so they say.

At least, that is the message sent out by transport agency Agens, rail and intermodal operator association Assoferr, logistics association Assologistica and rail freight associations Fercargo and Fermerci, who are the founding parties of Binario Italia.

A clear message

Binario Italia points out that rail has many advantages: each kilometre travelled by rail saves around 15 euros in external costs compared to the road. Despite that, the sector is struggling to stay competitive. The new task force has an unambiguous message: “We need clear, certain and stable rules over time that encourage investments, short-term measures to avoid the collapse of the system and long-term measures to define its relaunch.”
