Laude has opened an intermodal terminal in Zamość

On June 23, the official opening of the new Laude Smart Intermodal terminal located at the Zamość Bortatycze railway station on the wide-gauge LHS line took place. The terminal will be able to handle 10 trains per day.

The completed investment allowed to increase the transshipment capacity of the terminal to 15,000 TEU containers per year. This makes it possible to export a much larger volume of cargo from Ukraine than before. Laude Smart Intermodal S.A. has invested almost PLN 30 million in the expansion of the terminal in Zamość. This is another investment carried out in accordance with the company's mission, assuming the creation of a new quality of logistics services and the implementation of efficient and ecological solutions using the advantages of intermodal transport. This would not have been possible without the effective acquisition of EU subsidies. "Over the last fifteen years, as part of EU aid programs, we have completed 14 projects with a total value of over PLN 436 million aimed at the development of container transport and other modern solutions increasing the competitiveness of rail transport, emphasizes Marcin Witczak, President of Laude Smart Intermodal.

Greater transhipment potential close to the border

The tender for the execution of construction works related to the extension of the intermodal terminal at the Zamość Bortatycze railway station was announced in August 2020. As part of this project, a new wide track (with a clearance of 1520 mm) was created from the west, which will enable the collision-free introduction of a container warehouse to the terminal area, and from the south – a new normal track (with a width of 1435 mm). The length of each of these tracks is 900 m. The haulage tracks for standard and broad gauge wagons have also been extended and a weave of normal and wide track has been built, which will allow collision-free putting of damaged containers for repair. The extensive track system (over 6.4 km in total) will allow containers to be reloaded from broad-gauge to standard-gauge wagons, increasing the efficiency of transshipment works. The transshipment capacity after the expansion of the terminal is 6-10 trains per day. The terminal is equipped with two 40-ton cranes, five reachstacker container trucks, whose task is to improve the rail and car traffic served, as well as weight. The new yard allows the storage of 2,000 TEU containers. In addition, several parking and maneuvering yards were created. The total area of paved squares is 38,000 sqm. By the end of the year, a third crane will be installed.

Railway support for exports from Ukraine

It is important that this investment coincided with the completion of works at the Zamość Majdan station, carried out by PKP LHS. Built Including. five tracks with a total length of 6 km along with turnouts equipped with modern railway traffic control equipment, as well as a loading yard with an area of 14,000 sqm. and an access road. The construction of the bypass increases the capacity of the entire line.

"These investments allow us to support Ukrainian exports to European customers. In fact, today the only possibility are railway routes, especially the LHS line from the Polish-Ukrainian border to Sławków, as well as transshipment facilities that can be provided by terminals located on railway lines connecting Poland with Ukraine, such as ours in Zamość – says President Marcin Witczak.

The current technical condition of the LHS allows for the passage of 12 pairs of trains per day. "A success with the current organization of work at border crossings and transport on the LHS line would be the transport of 2 million tons of cereals from Ukraine per month. The use of specialized containers for the transport of bulk cargo, into which it can be loaded Including. grain would improve logistics, reducing the costs and time needed for transshipment at terminals. In the case of transhipment at stations and terminals where there is a change in track gauge, the total time to operate the coal truck is counted in days. The operation of the container train is much faster. Laude can transport up to 4,000 tons in one train and this, combined with the change in the organization of traffic on the LHS line, can make the goal of exporting grain by rail from Ukraine achieved – assures President Witczak. – We have been building our relations with clients from Ukraine since 2008.
