From January to March 2022, rail carriers transported almost 6.6 million tons of cargo in intermodal transport. Comparing these results with the data for the corresponding period of the previous year, there was an increase by over 0.3 million tonnes (a change by 5.4%). The transport performance in the analyzed period amounted to almost 2.1 billion tonnes-km and increased by over 0.2 billion tonnes-km (a change by 10.8%). In the first quarter of 2022, carriers transported over 466 thousand. units of units, which constituted nearly 751 thousand TEU. Compared to the first quarter of 2021, the number of units transported increased by 11.3% (according to TEU by 9.2%). The share of intermodal transport in the rail freight market reached the level of 10.6% (by weight) and 14.4% (by work performed).
“The segment of intermodal transport is growing year by year. In the years 2020-2021, despite the restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic, intermodal transport also developed. Currently, in the face of the war across the eastern border, a question may be asked how this will affect intermodal transport. In the first quarter of this year, intermodal transport recorded an increase in all parameters compared to the corresponding period in 2021. Intermodal traffic is not only the New Silk Road, therefore it is also important to ensure proper access to seaports, which largely determine the potential of transport using containers . The intermodal transport market still has potential, but emphasis must be placed on the development of logistics processes and their speed " - notes Dr. Ignacy Góra, President of the Office of Rail Transport.
In the first quarter of 2022, 20 licensed carriers performed intermodal rail transport.
