Girteka Logistics rail freight division doubling its numbers 10/02/22

Girteka Logistics, a traditionally road and truck logistics company, sees its rail freight division growing. The company’s intermodal activity increased significantly during 2021. With over 16,100 fully-loaded trailers travelling on rail tracks with Girteka, the number of FTLs carried by the company doubled in 2021 compared to 2020.
Of course, for Girteka, reducing CO2 emissions is rail freight’s greatest perk. However, the company has some more interesting insights. It calculated and found “that carrying FTLs on the back of trains across Europe reduced the number of tires that Girteka Logistics needed throughout the year by 900, as well as avoided at least 61 accidents on the road”. This means that rail not only benefits the environment but it also contributes to road safety.
New routes
Girteka Logistics opened three new rail freight dedicated corridors in 2021. The first was the link between Kaunas in Lithuania and Tilburg in the Netherlands. The company started putting cargo on this line in July 2021 because it could also combine transit via Poland since the service also stops in Rzepin.
Two more routes are operational. One starts from Germany, connecting an industrial area with southern France, and the other links northern Italy with northern France. At the same time, the company has more plans for the near future. Specifically, the logistics provider noted that “growth, in particular, intermodal rail freight services to and from the United Kingdom (UK) will be one of the main priorities going forward in 2022”.
The stakes are high. A 50 per cent growth is expected for this year by Girteka, and if the forecasts are accurate, this will mean a back to back growth for the company. Intermodal transport seems to be establishing and getting more space in the company’s activities, indicating that the modal shift can happen if the incentives are right.
