Several logistics companies have joined to arrange a new multimodal supply chain for moving fruits in reefer containers from Turkey to Russia. By combining shipping lines and rail freight connections, they succeeded in establishing a faster and more reliable mode of transport than by using trucks or only trains.

The new multimodal cold chain connects Istanbul in Turkey and Yekaterinburg in the Ural region of Russia. It consists of two legs: maritime and railway. First, the containers are delivered from Istanbul to the Russian port of Novorossiysk by shipping lines of Maersk. Afterwards, they are moved to Yekaterinburg by rail. To establish this service, four logistics companies teamed up: Maersk is responsible for maritime leg, Ruscon and Yekaterinburg (both are part of the Delo Group) provide rail delivery while Polyarnaya Zvezda is devoted to the refrigeration.

Promising region

The first Istanbul-Yekaterinburg multimodal shipment of the Turkish fresh fruits was sent last week, on 11 November. It included 12 forty-foot Maersk refrigerated containers and an autonomous energy container to maintain temperature regime and power generation. This week, the partners are planning to send the second batch of reefers with fruits from Turkey to Russia. “The Ural region is a promising area for the development of railway container services from the South of Russia, especially for refrigerated shipments with delicate cargo,” said Andrey Chernyshev, senior vice-president of Ruscon.
