The Spanish Transport Association (AET) has published a study entitled 'Cost reduction in the transport of goods by rail', on the occasion of the celebration of the European Year of the Railway. In this report, the AET insists on the need for the competent authorities and companies in the sector to take urgent measures to promote the use of railways in logistics chains.

In the study, the association also analyzes the causes and consequences of the underuse of its rail network. "Spain has sufficient railway infrastructure so that the participation of its railway in the transport of goods was much higher than the current one," the document warns. To deal with this situation, the AET proposes 27 concrete measures to take advantage of the growth of intermodality as an opportunity for rail freight transport. Among these measures, highlights the proposal to "implement a State plan that aims to reduce rail costs, or the creation of a" Co-modality "unit that encourages the development of rail intermodality from the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda.

In short, this report encourages taking advantage of the European context determined by the celebration of the European Year of Railways to promote rail freight transport in Spain. It also recalls that the European Next Generation funds and the European Union's commitment to sustainable, safe and connected mobility constitute a real opportunity to develop this mode, since it is the most sustainable land transport. In this sense, the AET recalls that "it is necessary and urgent that both the competent authorities and the companies in the sector take the necessary measures to promote the use of rail in logistics chains."
