Reports and numbers

Twice a year, the BAV provides information on the current development in transalpine traffic with a report on the last semester.

Highest rail share in transalpine freight traffic for 30 years

At 74.9 percent, the railway's share of the total freight transport through the Alps reached its highest level in 30 years. This is due to the completion of the NRLA with the Ceneri base tunnel, the commissioning of the four-meter corridor on the Gotthard axis and other measures in favor of the modal shift policy. Truck journeys through the Alps have fallen slightly compared to the previous year.

Observatory for road and rail freight transport in the Alps

(France, Switzerland, Austria)

The overland transport agreement provides for the establishment of a permanent observatory for road and rail freight transport in the Alpine region in order to analyze the development of transport and its determining factors. The aim of this observatory is to regularly collect data on the development of traffic and the causes of this development. The annual reports provide the basis for transport policy measures for transalpine freight transport at national or European level.

The 14th annual report presents the results of the transport observatory for road and rail freight transport in 2020.

Traffic development in transalpine freight traffic following the completion of the NRLA

Against the background of the progressive implementation of the Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) at the time, the BAV had the foreseeable productivity effects in transalpine rail freight transport with the completion of the NRLA analyzed in depth in 2011/12. In the meantime, the GBT has been put into operation, the Ceneri Base Tunnel (CBT) is about to go into operation and the expansion of the Gotthard axis to a 4-meter corridor is underway. At the same time, the first findings from the operation of the GBT are available. Against this background, the BAV has updated the analysis of the productivity effects of the NRLA, taking into account the latest traffic developments as well as the factors relevant to modal shift.
