Action paves the way for construction of the North Extension of the Port of Valencia and over €1 billion in investment by TiL in a new automated terminal.

The Board of Directors of the Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) has voted to approve the construction project for the North Extension of the Port of Valencia. The terminal is a €1.56 billion project, including a public investment of €542.7M from the PAV and expenditure of €1,021M from MSC’s Terminal Investment Limited (TiL).

PAV said the new terminal will be “the most sustainable and modern container terminal in the world, a model for the environment, where the electricity will come from 100% renewable sources, which will allow the supply of electricity to ships in port and will have a clear commitment to the railway. The new terminal will reinforce Valencia Port’s position in the Mediterranean and its work as a tractor company at the service of Spanish economic activity.”

The terminal will have an area of 137 hectares with 1,970m of quay and a total capacity of 5M TEU. PAV added that the terminal will be “a fully electrified facility”. This would appear to include the horizontal transport between the quay and the yard. “The project presented by TIL/MSC to Valencia port includes the electrification of 98% of the driving components and installations of the terminal; and in addition, 100% of the electricity will come from renewable sources, which in turn will imply a 98% reduction in CO2 emissions,” PAV said.

Other features of the terminal will include “automation, the use of advanced traffic prediction systems, the design of the buildings with energy efficiency criteria, and the external lighting system with LED-type luminaires.”

The terminal will have on-dock rail transhipment terminal with six 1,000m tracks with the capacity to move 305,000 TEU/year by rail.
