Intermodal transport decreased in the first quarter of 2023

In the first quarter of 2023, over 5.8 million tons of cargo were transported in intermodal rail transport. The transport performance amounted to nearly 1.9 billion tonne-kilometers. Compared to the same period last year, intermodal transport results decreased by over 12%.

From January to March 2023, rail carriers transported over 5.8 million tons of cargo in intermodal transport. Comparing these results with data for the same period last year, there was a decrease by 0.8 million tons (-12.1%). Transport performance in the analyzed period amounted to nearly 1.9 billion tonne-km and decreased by almost 0.3 billion tonne-km (-12.5%). In the first quarter of 2023, carriers transported over 397,000. units, which accounted for nearly 625 thousand. TEUs. Compared to the first quarter of 2022, the number of transported units decreased by 11.3% (according to TEU by 15.3%).

In the first quarter of 2023, the share of intermodal transport in the rail freight market was 9.6% (by weight) and 11.6% (by transport performance).“The situation beyond the eastern border has undoubtedly influenced rail transport, including the intermodal transport segment. The weight of cargo transported at border crossings serving transport on the New Silk Road in the first quarter of this year decreased by nearly 50% year on year. The basic parameters of intermodal transport recorded double-digit decreases in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the first quarter of 2022. We are still not sure how the geopolitical situation will affect intermodal transport in the long run. This segment definitely has potential. Intermodal transport also includes north-south routes from seaports, which is why it is necessary to look for new directions and develop the offer for customers" - notes Dr. Eng. Ignacy Góra, President of the Office of Rail Transport .

Comparing the results for the first quarter of 2023 with the results for the fourth quarter of 2022, we also see declines. The weight of goods decreased by over 0.3 million tonnes (a change of 5.5%), and the transport performance decreased by almost 0.1 billion tonne-km (a change of 4.2%). Other parameters, such as the number of transported units, also decreased - by over 8,000. units (2%), and the number of TEUs - by nearly 27 thousand. TEUs (4.1%).

In the first quarter of 2023, intermodal rail transport was performed by 23 licensed carriers. In terms of transported weight and transport performance, the following companies had the largest shares in intermodal transport: PCC Intermodal, DB Cargo Polska and PKP Cargo.
