Better results for combined transport in Europe in Q2 this year

Author: Łukasz Kuś 2024/08/14

The combined transport industry in Europe recorded a result of 4.24% better in the second quarter of 2024 than in the same period last year, the International Union of Combined Road-Rail Transport (UIRR) reported. The sentiment of entrepreneurs in this sector was described as "neutral".

The improvement in combined transport results in the second quarter was due to fewer disruptions than at the beginning of the year. It was the track closures and other restrictions on rail traffic introduced during infrastructure repairs that had a negative impact on intermodal transport in recent months. Currently, carriers must still expect disruptions on key freight routes in Europe.

Problems on the tracks

Work is underway on the Rhine Valley Railway, the Munich-Vienna line and the Simplon trunk line connecting Switzerland and Italy. A major problem for freight carriers and intermodal operators is the poor coordination of work on the railway lines of different countries. Entrepreneurs also have concerns about the further pace of economic growth and the effects of the war in the East. However, the industry continues to invest with a view to the long-term growth of combined transport.

“The Combined Transport community continues to invest in new transport and terminal capacities, as well as in digital solutions, to further increase its competitiveness. The support of decision-makers is needed to strengthen the business confidence that fuels the development of our highly efficient combined transport services. And the reindustrialization of Europe requires more combined transport,” comments Ralf-Charley Schultze, CEO of UIRR.
