Girteka focuses on intermodality and the use of HVO in its commitment to decarbonizing transport
Girteka has presented the second phase of its sustainability campaign, analysing sustainable transport solutions , highlighting the benefits, challenges and opportunities associated with intermodality and its potential when combined with HVO.
Decarbonisation of road transport is driving innovation and debate in the logistics sector : battery electric vehicles (BEVs) still face obstacles to adoption for long-distance travel, hydrogen technology is in its early stages and the upcoming EURO 7 standard is expected to have a limited impact. Against this backdrop, the company is considering whether intermodality and rail transport are viable solutions .
Although there is no silver bullet to decarbonise transport, intermodal transport has great potential to make long-distance freight transport greener . And when combined with alternative fuels, such as HVO , it can have a substantial influence on reducing emissions.

Intermodal rail transport
Intermodal transport , like multimodal transport, integrates multiple modes of transport to optimise efficiency and reduce emissions . By leveraging rail transport for long-distance journeys, emissions can be reduced by up to 90% . And when combined with HVO or HVO100, it can create green supply chains . Despite the challenges posed by infrastructure constraints, the European Union is actively supporting this transition through initiatives such as the Greening of Freight Transport Package.
