‘Rail highway between Perpignan and Cologne in the works’

Spanish transport company Transfesa Logistics is working on a rail highway between Perpignan (southern France) and Cologne (Germany). It is reportedly not the only such project currently in development. The new route would allow Transfesa to adjust its business focus to align with its parent company.

Details of Transfesa’s plan are not yet available, but the company will likely make an announcement in the coming weeks, according to Spanish publication El Mercantil. Similar projects could reportedly follow in the future.

Transfesa, a DB Cargo subsidiary, hopes to get closer to the core business of its German parent company. In order to achieve that, it is not only launching a rail highway to Germany, but it also sold its automotive logistics subsidiary Semat to the French Groupe CAT.

“The transaction allows us to strengthen our strategic alignment with the core business of DB Cargo, our parent company: rail freight transport, with a particular focus on the automotive sector”, Transfesa commented on the sale.

Automotive

The focus on the automotive sector is not a new decision. Transfesa has already been working to adapt its rolling stock fleet to facilitate automotive logistics, for which it also received European funding. The logistics company got enough money to acquire 200 standard gauge wagons, and in February it had received half of those.

“We will move forward with the reception of the new international car transport wagons, the acquisition of which is already underway, and with the progressive update of the truck fleet of our subsidiary Capsa, ensuring a comprehensive and competitive operation”, Transfesa commented on the matter.
