The Schavemaker terminal in Kąty Wrocławskie has been adapted to accommodate 740 m long trains

At the Schavemaker intermodal terminal in Kąty Wrocławskie, work has been completed to adapt the siding to handle 740 m long trains. The terminal's operational capacity has increased by 25%.

Schavemaker Invest is expanding and modernizing the terminal located in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, which is an important logistics hub on the North Sea-Baltic and Baltic-Adriatic corridors. The second stage of the investment was recently completed, thanks to which the terminal will be able to accept 740 m long trains, in accordance with the standards of the European TEN-T network, and also handle 3 trains simultaneously.

As part of the work carried out by Track Tec, a new delivery and acceptance track was built and the length of the siding tracks was increased by 1,700 m. A separate space for parking wagons was created, as well as modern lighting installations and railway turnout heating systems with electric switches, which increased work efficiency and safety.

- The expansion of the container terminal's rail siding allows for increased capacity, improved train service and improved transport efficiency. Thanks to this, the terminal becomes more competitive, contributes to reducing emissions by reducing truck traffic and supports the development of the local economy and integration with international transport routes. This is a key step towards sustainable development and preparation for the growing needs of intermodal transport development - assesses the terminal's director Przemysław Zemla.

Further investments

As part of the next phase of the project, Schavemaker Invest is planning work that will enable direct train entry to the terminal siding, bypassing the additional tracks of the Kąty Wrocławskie station. Trains will be able to enter the terminal from both the Smolec and Mietków sides. A procedure was recently announced to select a contractor for this work, which will improve train traffic within the siding and also relieve the Kąty Wrocławskie station.

The Schavemaker Invest investment in Kąty Wrocławskie was financially supported with EUR 2.7 million from the CEF program for 2021-2027 as part of the project "Expansion and change of the work model at the Intermodal transport hub in Kąty Wrocławskie located on the corridors: North Sea - Baltic Sea and Baltic Sea - Adriatic Sea".

Schavemaker is also investing in solutions that reduce the impact of freight transport on the environment. Next year, a photovoltaic farm with an energy storage and a fast charger will be built next to the terminal in Kąty Wrocławskie. Schavemaker is also the first intermodal operator in Poland to start using a Scania truck with an electric drive to transport loads in the so-called first and last mile, between the terminal and the customer's premises. A 400 kW fast charger has also been installed on the company's premises, which allows the vehicle to be charged to 100% in just 45 minutes. Using such a charger significantly speeds up the driver's work, minimizing downtime related to charging the vehicle, while maintaining the driver's rest break.
