MSC unveils first rail wagons manufactured in new Trieste plant

Eleven months ago, shipping giant MSC took over a site at the port of Trieste to reconvert it into a rolling stock component manufacturing plant. Now, the first wagons produced by Innoway (the joint venture launched with Innofreight) and destined to Yellow2Rail and Papierholz Austria have been unveiled.

MSC decided to take over the location at the port of Trieste formerly used by Wärtsilä, a Finnish maritime engine manufacturer which left the site in the summer of 2022. Currently, 50 people are employed at Innoway, but the plan is to increase the workforce to roughly 260 by July 2027. The number is not casual, as MSC plans to reintegrate 254 former Wärtsilä employees.

MSC has been investing around 100 million euros for the conversion of the location. Initially, the company will focus on assembling prefabricated components. In a second stage, all processes will be implemented in-house. Once the factory is at full capacity, it will be able to produce 3,000 wagons and 1,000 bogies every year. This, according to the parties involved, will turn the site in Bagnoli della Rosandra, into the largest rail wagon manufacturing plant in Europe.
