JOINT STATEMENT ON THE WEIGHTS AND DIMENSIONS DIRECTIVE

In the ongoing discussions around the revision of the Weights and Dimensions Directive (WDD 96/53/EC), the undersigned organisations believe that the text would cause severe side-effects, impacting more than the transport sector. These issues need to be considered prior to adopting a legislative act.
The introduction of longer, higher and heavier European Modular Systems (EMS) is incompatible with the Commission’s commitment to increase rail freight by 50 % in 2030 and 100 % in 2050, as set out in the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy.
