Container traffic on network owned by Russian Railways up 17.8% January-October 2020
In January-October 2020, 4.8 million loaded and empty Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit (TEUs) containers were transported on the network owned by Russian Railways on all routes, 17.8% more than in the same ten months of 2019.
More than 1.9 million TEUs were dispatched on domestic routes, an increase of 12.7%, while 1.2 million TEUs were shipped for export, an increase of 14.5%, 1 million TEUs were imported, up by 15.5%, and 637,000 TEUs were transit consignments, a jump of 36.5%.
The number of loaded containers dispatched on all routes increased by 17.8% and amounted to 3.3 million TEUs carrying 46.2 million tons of cargo, an increase of 18.3%.
Loaded containers carrying the following the categories of freight were dispatched during January-October 2020. The figures in brackets show the percentage changes compared to January-October 2019.
- chemicals and soda – 574,900 TEUs (+26.4%);
 - timber – 455,800 (+6.3%);
 - paper – 296,000 (+15.5%);
 - industrial goods – 323,000 (+27.7%);
 - fabricated metal products – 272,000 (+15.9%);
 - machines, machine tools and engines – 240,800 (+29.2%);
 - cars and components – 194,300 (-3.6%);
 - ferrous metals – 166,600 (+45.7%);
 - non-ferrous metals – 120,500 (+27.4%);
 - miscellaneous and consolidated cargo – 107,700 (+19.4%);
 - construction materials – 107,000 (+12.4%);
 - oil and petroleum – 67,700 (-5.9%);
 - chemical and mineral fertilisers – 35,000 (+7.6%);
 - non-ferrous ore and sulphur feedstock – 22,800 (+42.6%);
 - fabricated metals – 13,800 (-4.1%);
 - fish – 18,300 (-1.2%);
 - grain – 7,400 (+28.4%);
 - milled products – 8,800 (+13.1%);
 - potatoes, fruits and vegetables – 6,100 (up by a factor of 1.6 times);
 - sugar – 3,200 (+24.9%);
 - salt – 1,200 (+4.1%);
 - miscellaneous food products – 135,000 (up by a factor of 1.4 times).
