More than 7 freight trains a day used the cross-border section in July, above the previous high reached in June.

Línea Figueras Perpignan recorded its highest monthly freight traffic in July 2026, with more than 230 freight trains using the international section between Spain and France. It was the second consecutive monthly record, after the same corridor posted a new high in June.

The result matters because the Figueres-Perpignan section is not a conventional border route. It is the 44.4 km double-track high-speed line between Llers, near Figueres, and Le Soler, near Perpignan, built for mixed passenger and freight traffic on UIC gauge. That makes it the standard-gauge rail connection between the Iberian network and France for Mediterranean corridor flows.

The July figure confirms that the recovery is no longer limited to a single strong month. LFP says freight traffic also maintained a high average train mass, which points to better use of train paths rather than only more light movements. The company did not publish tonnage, so the verified change is in train numbers.

The traffic rebound follows a difficult financial and operating period for the section. Spain and France amended the operating agreement in late 2025 after lower-than-expected revenues, and the second amendment had already introduced lower freight access charges from 1 January 2025 to make the route more attractive for rail freight.
