The intermodal logistics connections of Eastern Hungary are set to reach a new level through the cooperation between East-West Intermodal Logistics Plc. (EWG) and A.P. Moller - Maersk.

Representatives of the two companies presented the agreement at the EWG terminal in Fényeslitke during a ceremonial event. Under the partnership, one of the world’s leading integrated logistics companies will launch container depot and dry port services at the terminal, strengthening the region’s role in global supply chains and intermodal freight transport. With this development, the EWG terminal joins the roughly 10 percent of inland intermodal terminals worldwide that meet the infrastructure and operational requirements necessary to function as a dry port.

During the event held at the Fényeslitke intermodal terminal, the companies’ executives marked the start of their long-term cooperation with a ceremonial signing. The foundations of the partnership had already been laid earlier: discussions on the agreement began in 2025, and operational implementation of the project has been progressing steadily since then. As part of the agreement, Maersk will establish a dry port at the EWG terminal in Fényeslitke. The dry port concept means that a shipping line relocates certain functions traditionally carried out in seaports to an inland terminal, turning the selected hub into an integral element of its global logistics network.

A dry port represents the highest level of cooperation between ocean carriers and inland intermodal terminals. Such partnerships improve the management of loaded containers, increase the efficiency of inland customs processes and create new inland distribution points for empty container flows. According to some estimates, only about 10 percent of inland intermodal terminals used by shipping lines worldwide meet the requirements needed to operate as a dry port.

Establishing such a virtual port requires several months of preparation and detailed risk analysis, making the decision a long-term strategic commitment. The move by the Danish logistics company therefore sends a dual message: it confirms that the infrastructure and operational standards of the EWG terminal provide a reliable basis for dry port operations, while also reflecting Maersk’s confidence in the stability and future growth of the region’s economy.

“This cooperation marks an important milestone for EWG and clearly demonstrates that the Fényeslitke terminal is well positioned to serve as a key node in global logistics networks in the long term,” said Roman Vinar, CEO of East-West Intermodal Logistics Plc. “EWG plays an important role in strengthening our regional inland network and in connecting our customers’ logistics flows more efficiently. We believe that EWG will open new opportunities in the region,” added Andrea Ordody, Hungary Sales and Country Manager, Maersk.

New logistics opportunities for the region

The combination of container depot and dry port functions creates new logistics opportunities for both export and import flows in the region. Dry port solutions are playing an increasingly important role in global supply chains, as they enhance flexibility in transportation processes and contribute to more efficient logistics systems. The strategic location of the EWG terminal is a key factor in the international cooperation. The facility is located at the intersection of key road and rail routes in the region and is part of the TEN-T European transport network, as well as the rail routes of the Middle Corridor.

This allows the terminal to provide efficient connections to neighbouring countries while also offering direct access to the intensive transit regions of Eastern Hungary, enabling it to serve as a regional logistics hub for international freight flows. The terminal’s modern infrastructure, high level of digitalisation and automated operations also played an important role in Maersk selecting EWG as its regional partner.

Stronger integration into international logistics networks

Through the cooperation, EWG will become more closely integrated into Maersk’s Central and Eastern European logistics network, which connects several international transport routes with intermodal terminals across the region.

This will enable more efficient transport organisation and open new perspectives for developing cargo flows between the region and global trade routes. Container traffic through the terminal has already started, with the first export train arriving in Fényeslitke in February 2026. Rail connections currently operate according to market demand, while the partners are working on launching regular services.

The significance of the partnership goes beyond the introduction of a new service. The agreement also signals that international logistics companies increasingly rely on regional hubs capable of providing fast, flexible and intermodal connections. The cooperation is expected to further increase the attractiveness of the Fényeslitke terminal for international logistics service providers.
