PCC Intermodal has transported 4 million TEU since the beginning of its operations
Translated from Polish
24.12.2025 | In 2005, intermodal operator PCC Intermodal SA transported its first TEU by train from Brzeg Dolny to Świnoujście. Ten years later, in 2015, the company transported its first million TEU . Just over four years later, PCC Intermodal surpassed 2 million TEUs transported by rail.
The operator surpassed the third million TEU milestone in January 2023.
The fourth million will be added to this total in the anniversary year of 2025, when the company celebrates the 20th anniversary of the launch of its first intermodal train. And it's worth noting: the year isn't over yet! During this time, the company has completed investments worth over €150 million , one-third of which ( €50 million ) came from EU funds.
The example of PCC Intermodal confirms that the intermodal industry in Europe has a future, and that intermodal itself is an effective transport method on both domestic and international routes. Investments in intermodal terminals connected by a network of regular connections have proven to be the right direction of development and provide real support for the railways. It is also increasingly becoming a convenient solution for manufacturers and a viable alternative when they cannot or do not want to use long-distance road transport.
Despite the difficulties that the intermodal industry still faces, over the last two decades the operator has managed to:
- Build the largest operational transshipment terminal in central Poland (PCC Kutno Terminal);
- Build an international network of intermodal connections that supports container transport according to regular schedules and is accessible even to small shippers;
- Modernise transshipment terminals in Lower Silesia (Brzeg Dolny), Upper Silesia (Gliwice), on the Polish/German border in Frankfurt (Oder) and launch a transshipment depot in Podkarpacie (Kolbuszowa);
- Guarantee Polish ports intermodal access to the most economically important regions of the country several times a day;
- Provide Polish and foreign producers with easy, daily access to modern logistics solutions and daily transport connections between Poland and Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Ukraine.
At its own and partner land terminals within the PCC network, the operator can currently handle over one million TEU annually. One million TEU is also the key milestone for the operator's largest investment planned – the Intermodal Container Yard in Zajączkowo Tczewski. The dry port is an initiative that will enhance intermodal traffic in the Baltic-Adriatic corridor and provide ports with additional land-side capacity for containers handled at maritime terminals.
Millions of people around the world are watching the intermodal industry, and millions are rooting for it. Hundreds of companies are investing millions to ensure the container industry thrives, connecting regions and continents. Intermodal has become a permanent fixture in the landscape of modern, rapidly developing economies.
The operator started in the industry as a company of just a few people, today PCC Intermodal is a team of over 500 employees who build real, solid foundations for international trade every day.
" The 4 million TEUs we have transported so far is a huge success, but also a huge challenge, which we have overcome. Behind every single TEU of these 4 million lies a huge amount of work, people, and sacrifices we make every day. The operational knowledge and experience we have gained over the last two decades are paying off. We will try to maintain this trend and achieve the next million in intermodal even faster, but it won't be easy. Intermodal is facing a million challenges today , and we expect there to be no fewer of them next year. We need investments in linear infrastructure – we are glad they are being implemented, but each of them means millions of hours worked , messages read and written, changes implemented, new solutions that we must analyze. All this to ensure that transports are carried out efficiently, quickly, and wisely – and to fulfill the millions of hopes placed in us," comments Tomasz Skarżyński, Customer Service Director at PCC Intermodal SA.
