With an initial investment of 25 million euros, the logistics hub in the west of the country connects Romania daily with Western Europe – and from June 2026 it enters a new stage of expansion, financed by the Transport Programme 2021-2027.
A reference terminal in Central and Eastern Europe
Railport Arad, part of Curtici Cargo Center, is the largest and most modern landline terminal in Romania and one of the largest in Central and Eastern Europe. The investment, with a total value of 25 million euros, plays an important role as the terminal operator of the region, serving predominantly continental traffic and having the already proven logistic hub potential for freight flows between Western Europe, Turkey and the Balkans.
The terminal provides regular rail links with intermodal terminals in Liége, Antwerpen, Duisburg, Lambach, Lovosice and Budapest, with frequencies between two and five departures and arrivals per week. Operations shall be carried out 24/24, 7/7.
Kalmar equipment and parallel operating capacity
With four portal cranes on tyres, three reach-stackers and three terminal tractors — all the Kalmar brand — at Railport Arad are handled and positioned quickly and efficiently any type of intermodal transport unit: from classic containers of different sizes to semi-trailer, flat racks and mobile boxes.
With five industrial railway lines with a useful length between 620 and 650 meters below the cranes, the terminal can operate in parallel four complete trains, with the possibility of moving the units directly from one train to the other. In addition to these operational lines, there are also two LFIs for carriage parking.
Expansion of 9.5 million euros, with start in June
At the end of 2024, the company’s expansion project was selected for funding under the Transportation Program 2021–2027, Priority P7, for the development of shipping and multimodal. Currently, the evaluation of the tenders for the selection of the winning companies is carried out, and, starting in June, the implementation of the project will start.
The works will include:
- extension of all seven railway lines in the enclosure to corridor parameters (740 m);
- the extension of the technical and operational area;
- installation of OCR gates on the road and rail;
- commissioning of a new terminal operating system (TOS);
- building a photovoltaic park for own consumption and an office building;
- extension of the outdoor lighting network and the firefighting network.
The total value of the project is 9.5 million euros without VAT, with a non-reimbursable component of 80%. The expansion will take place on a 3.5-hectare plot, joined by the 10.3 hectares already used.
Curtici Cargo Center: full transport and logistics ecosystem
Curtici Cargo Center, having as basic component the Railport Arad intermodal terminal, also offers storage possibilities for palletized goods in a modern hall of 3,600 sqm, respectively on 5,000 sqm outdoors. To these are added railway maneuvering services that provide contact with CFR Curtici station, security services, expeditions and trucking services first and last mile.
The transport and logistics complex also has a secure gold level parking for 200 trucks, with resting places for drivers and restaurant, as well as a maintenance center for wagons.
