In the first half of 2025, the total volume of transalpine freight traffic saw a marked decline. According to provisional figures from the Federal Office of Transport (FOT), the volume through Switzerland for both modes of transport fell by 11.6% in the first half of 2025. This decline was particularly pronounced in rail freight performance. Overall, the decrease in rail volume accelerated, resulting in a 15.8% drop compared to the previous year, reaching 11.69 million tons (H1 2024: 14.12 million tons). There are clear differences between the two main rail axes: While the Lötschberg-Simplon axis lost 44% of its volume (from 4.82 million tons to only 2.70 million tons), the decline on the Gotthard axis was more moderate at -1.3% (from 9.37 million tons to 9.25 million tons). According to the Federal Office of Transport (BAV), the partial closure of the Simplon Tunnel due to construction work was the primary reason for this. As a result of these developments, the share of rail freight in the modal split fell from 72.3% in the first half of 2024 to 68.9% in the same period of 2025.
